Evolution of the GO Olivebiome project

Publication date: 16/01/2026

Description

The GO Olivebiome project, technically coordinated by Maslina , is making strong progress towards the industrial validation of sustainable probiotic solutions for animal feed, thanks to the full incorporation of AINIA .

The latest advances focus on three key milestones:

  • Optimizing cultures : AINIA is comparing probiotic growth in MRS medium and whey, with the aim of identifying the most efficient and sustainable system. The use of whey further reinforces the project's circular economy approach.
  • Spray drying trials : The first spray drying trial of a probiotic co-culture has been successfully carried out, with positive preliminary results supporting its viability for future commercial developments.
  • Granulometry and efficiency : It has been shown that finer grinding of the prebiotic raw material allows increasing the fermentation concentration to up to 20% (compared to 2% with coarse grain), reducing costs and improving industrial efficiency.

These results consolidate Olivebiome as a benchmark project in applied biotechnology, with the aim of valorizing agricultural by-products and improving the intestinal health of poultry and pigs, contributing to reducing the use of antibiotics.

Next steps: intensification of pilot atomization trials, optimization of cultures and evaluation of the stability of probiotics in different formats, with a view to their real application in the livestock industry.
