Description

The LIFE GLOBAL project aims to implement a transnational restoration strategy in 31 Natura 2000 areas of high conservation value in the north of the Iberian Peninsula in Spain and Portugal, through small-scale actions, reaching an area of 1,321.53 ha, as a main adaptation measure to current global changes, improving the SC and resilience of 10 priority habitats and 3 priority species that are considered representative of the Atlantic and Mediterranean regions and the 3 scenarios of highest conservation value. The project has a highly demonstrative and pilot nature, allowing high transferability and replicability to other European territories where areas of high conservation value are concentrated and isolated in highly fragmented and vulnerable complex mosaics.

Contextual description

The areas of greatest diversity in the Iberian Peninsula are located in the northern part, with a combined presence in the three most vulnerable scenarios (coastal zone, continental wetlands and mountain zone) of priority habitats and species that have small areas/populations and are therefore found in unfavorable SC, are restricted to a few biogeographic regions and are highly vulnerable to IAS, anthropogenic conditions or the effects of global climate change.

Objectives
  • Increase the area occupied by target priority habitats, as well as the populations of target priority species.
  • Control and eliminate competition from IAS that are impacting SCs in priority habitats.
  • Improve the structure, functionality, and future prospects of priority habitats and the habitat of targeted priority species.
  • Availability of up-to-date and consistent information on priority habitats and species targeted in northern Iberia.
  • To inform and raise awareness among the general population about the importance, natural values, and ecosystem services provided by the targeted priority habitats and species.
  • Transfer the measures developed in the project for replicability at the EU level.
