Description

Currently, there is a paradox of both scarcity and overabundance of phosphorus (P). P is essential for agriculture and food security, but Europe does not have sufficient reserves to meet growing demand. At the same time, its excessive use has negative environmental impacts, polluting soils and water bodies. Sustainable P management is therefore of paramount importance, especially for the SUDOE region, where the agribusiness sector is crucial for growth and stability. However, such management presents a number of challenges and requires transnational collaboration, involving the multiple stakeholders in the P cycle. ENDORSE proposes a paradigm shift with the implementation of a Circular Economy model, through innovative and locally sourced solutions that foster symbiosis between the urban and rural sectors.

The novelty of the project lies in i) the cascade precipitation of different P salts, a more robust and lower operating cost process compared to others that precipitate a single salt (such as struvite); ii) the intelligent and sustainable application of the P salts obtained, which will allow a controlled release, maximizing the bioavailability of P and other nutrients, preserving soil health and minimizing environmental impact.

ENDORSE envisions four pilot projects in Castile and León and Andalusia (Spain), the Northern region (Portugal), and Occitanie and Nouvelle-Aquitaine (France). These multi-stakeholder and innovative projects will serve as demonstration projects applicable to other territories. ENDORSE will promote the modernization and attractiveness of the agricultural sector, primarily benefiting SMEs, and transforming the SUDOE region into a smart, innovative, competitive, and sustainable space.

Objectives

The main objective is to design and implement a transnational strategy for the recovery of phosphorus salts from organic waste rich in this nutrient, which promotes the subsequent valorization as fertilizers, through more sustainable agricultural practices to ensure food security and the protection of natural resources in the long term.
