Description

The world faces serious environmental challenges, with ecosystems like forests under constant threat from problems such as wildfires and biodiversity loss. Nature degradation is worsening, and we need better ways to monitor and protect the environment. Traditional environmental monitoring methods are often limited and expensive.

With this in mind, the EIC-funded EcoSentinel project turns plants into self-sufficient digital sensors. Using the natural energy of plants, EcoSentinel creates a network of "smart" plants that can monitor forests and other ecosystems. This enables a carbon-negative communication system, powered by nature itself, to detect and prevent environmental disasters such as wildfires. Through this digital network of plants, EcoSentinel aims to sustainably protect our planet.

Objectives

The EcoSentinel project envisions a revolutionary transformation in our relationship with nature to address urgent global sustainability challenges, such as the degradation of the integrity of the biosphere, by fostering a harmonious coexistence between technological innovation and environmental conservation, culminating in a community of Ecological Sentinels (EcoSentinels).

Specifically, EcoSentinel leverages the biological processes and resilience of living plants to provide them with the necessary means (i.e., energy harvesting and electromagnetic signal propagation) to become self-sufficient digital nodes in a self-monitoring network. This revolutionary approach seeks to enhance our ability to safeguard forests and other ecosystems. EcoSentinel technology will introduce a carbon-negative wireless communication system, powered by the ecosystem itself, enabling environmental monitoring to prevent and mitigate critical events such as wildfires and biodiversity loss.

The EcoSentinel project proposes a new form of plant interaction, elevating it to a digital level. By enhancing plant interconnectedness through cybernetic implants, we are embarking on a path toward the digital transformation of vegetation. This unprecedented approach aims to establish a novel plant-based wireless communication system, utilizing plants as natural antennas, powered solely by the integration of plant-microbial electricity generation seamlessly integrated into the vegetation.
