Abstract
The EUPAHW project will utilize resources from Research Executive Organizations (REOs), Funding Organizations (FOs), and EC co-funding to achieve ambitious transnational animal health and welfare goals.
Description

The EU-funded EUPAHW project aims to establish sustainable production practices for terrestrial and aquatic animals, while preventing and controlling infectious animal diseases, promoting the prudent use of antimicrobials, and ensuring high levels of animal welfare.

It is aligned with the European Green Deal's "Farm to Fork" strategy and the "One Health, One Well-being" approach. The project will utilize resources from Research Executive Organizations (REOs), Funding Organizations (FOs), and EC co-funding to achieve ambitious transnational animal health and welfare goals. The project management team will establish procedures to ensure equitable coverage of priority areas and the application of results in science, society, and policy.

Objectives

The European Partnership for Animal Health and Welfare (EUP AH&W) will provide society with sustainable production for both terrestrial and aquatic animals, where infectious animal diseases are prevented and controlled, antimicrobials are used prudently, and a high level of animal welfare is provided at every stage of the animals' lives. The objectives of EUP AH&W align with the European Green Deal and its associated Farm to Fork strategy for a fair, healthy, and environmentally friendly food system. Since its inception, EUP AH&W includes 56 Research Conducting Organizations (RPOs) and 30 Funding Organizations (FOs) from 24 EU and non-EU European countries. RPO partners provide important research-based advice to EU competent authorities and are the backbone of animal health and welfare (AHW) research in Europe.

They collaborated to transpose 16 actions from the EUP Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (EUP SRIA) into 17 joint internal projects. FO partners will contribute through external calls to new EUP SRIA R&D actions not covered by internal activities, as they require other expertise or industry involvement. Due to the close link between animal health and welfare and human well-being, the One Health-One Welfare perspective will feature prominently in the EUP AH&W. Mobilizing resources from both RPO and FO, along with EC co-funding, will enable the Partnership to achieve ambitious goals for AHW transnationally, in Europe, and beyond.

New technologies are developing rapidly and provide new R&I opportunities for AHW, which will be included in the AH&W EUP as joint internal activities and projects initiated through external calls. Management will establish appropriate procedures and methodologies to ensure fair coverage of domestic animals, terrestrial and aquatic animal species, and the various priority areas, and to ensure the uptake of medium-term (outcomes) and long-term (impact) results for science, society, and policy.
