Grassland livestock systems (RLFS) are fundamental to the sustainable development of agriculture in Europe, supporting the European Green Deal through vital ecosystem services. However, these systems face numerous challenges that threaten their viability. The EU-funded DIGI-Rangeland project seeks to address these challenges by creating an innovative network focused on digital technologies and data solutions tailored to farmers and land users in grassland areas.
With a multi-stakeholder approach across 10 countries, the project will facilitate knowledge exchange among EU stakeholders and foster collaboration in digital innovation. By identifying the needs and barriers faced by practitioners, the project will assess and promote effective digital solutions to ensure the resilience and sustainability of RLFS across Europe.
Grassland livestock production systems (LFPS), despite facing challenges, play an important role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in Europe. Although LFPS play an important role in the transition to the European Green Deal, providing crucial ecosystem services, they still require support, including extension services, farmer-to-farmer networks, and participatory monitoring and evaluation. The use of innovative technologies plays an important role and is part of a broader set of measures needed to improve the future viability of such farming systems.
The DIGI-Rangeland network aims to create and expand an innovative network on digital innovations and data technologies with stakeholders (farmers and other land users) facing challenges in grassland areas at the regional, national, and European levels. Based on a multi-stakeholder approach, the project aims to increase knowledge exchange and mutual understanding among EU stakeholders and foster cross-fertilization among grassland stakeholders around the use of digital technologies and innovations (DTI). To achieve this, partners from 10 countries will participate in:
- The creation of an EU network of farmers' groups, land users, 10 innovation and demonstration centres, and key stakeholders in the 10 rural AKIS.
- Identify, prioritize, and analyze the needs, obstacles, and expectations of farmers and land users.
- Identify and analyze DTI solutions that fit the needs of RLFS farmers and other land users.
- Evaluate solutions and barriers to fostering the adoption of DTI within the RFLS.
- Improve knowledge levels through a variety of extension activities, demonstrations, and training for farmers, advisors, students, and land users.
Partners will prepare and implement communication and dissemination activities through trusted channels to maximize the impact of project results.
