Livestock farming, crucial to the European agricultural sector, faces growing environmental concerns, producing more than 1.4 billion tons of manure annually, generating pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Despite advances in reduction methods, significant problems persist beyond current legislation.
In this context, the EU-funded NUTRITIVE project seeks to develop a decision-making tool for sustainable manure management, addressing environmental, economic, and social aspects. With six work packages ranging from inventory to guideline development, NUTRITIVE involves 22 partners from eight countries, ensuring a comprehensive approach across diverse climatic regions and with supply chain expertise.
This initiative promises to provide policymakers with essential information for future European agricultural policies.
The project is divided into six work packages (WPs): WP1: Inventory Update; WP2: Research into New Management Strategies/Technologies; WP3: Modeling and LCA; and WP4: Guideline Formulation; WP5: Communication, Dissemination, and Exploitation; and WP6: Management.
Livestock farming is a key sector, accounting for 40% of total agricultural activity in Europe, representing a total product value of €170 billion. However, there is growing concern about livestock farming's contribution to environmental pollution, generating over 1.4 billion tonnes of manure per year, resulting in significant greenhouse gas (GHG) and air pollutant (NH3, NOx) emissions, as well as soil and water pollution caused by hazardous chemicals in manure and biological contaminants (referred to here as emerging pollutants).
In this context, significant efforts have been made for years to assess the harmful effects of agricultural systems and develop implementable mitigation methods. However, despite significant progress, many key issues remain outside the scope of existing legislation. The main objective of NUTRITIVE is to develop a decision-support system (DSS) capable of defining the most efficient and sustainable manure management strategies (in its three pillars: environmental, economic, and social) for a given livestock farm, limiting manure emissions to the air, as well as soil and water pollutants. This will allow the formulation of technical guidelines and recommendations that will help knowledgeable policymakers establish requirements for future European policies.
To meet this objective, the project is divided into six work packages (WPs): WP1 Inventory update; WP2 Research into new management strategies/technologies; WP3 Modeling and LCA; and formulation of WP4 Guidelines; WP5 Communication, dissemination and exploitation; WP6 Management. NUTRITIVE envisages a wide dissemination of the project results, based on the consortium synthesis: 22 partners (4 Chinese) from 8 different European countries, covering 6 climatic regions (2 Chinese), representing all experts in the supply chain, from animal feed to land application.
