Description

Today, young people are increasingly looking to ecovillages for answers to the challenges the global world poses. The ecovillage movement seeks to connect with nature and human needs for health, integration, and a coherent vision of the future, with goals of sustainability and resilience. Los Portales, an ecovillage founded in 1984 and located in Castilblanco de los Arroyos (Seville, Spain), is one of the oldest and most established in Spain. Since 2011, young people from around the world have been seeking an experience that responds to these challenges and have brought this seed back to their places of origin. The "Learning to Live and Grow in an Ecovillage 5" project was designed for four volunteers interested in discovering and experiencing this way of life. For 9 to 12 months, they immersed themselves in ecovillage life and its various activities, accompanied by people with extensive experience.

Description of activities
  • Managing a garden to produce food for 30 people.
  • Cooking for Groups: Learn how to compose and prepare balanced menus for groups.
  • Management of a herd of 30 goats for milk production and processing of dairy products (cheese, yogurt).
  • Making organic artisan bread, learning the process from start to finish.
  • First contact with the ecovillage's three types of renewable energy: solar, wind, and hydroelectric.
  • Managing personal and group processes: tools for facilitating and resolving conflicts, and tools for developing creativity.
Objectives

Propose to the participants the acquisition of a series of tools

Results

The end result provided the volunteer with a comprehensive view of how life unfolds in an ecovillage, opening up a world of possibilities ranging from wanting to integrate into one to imagining how to create their own project with similar characteristics, or simply learning about the existence of this movement and becoming interested in it in their home country.
