Abstract

The CLIMACAL project was launched in October 2021 as a result of a collaboration between Bodegas Faustino, Pernod Ricard Winemakers Spain, and the Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development (NEIKER). The project aims to develop a new intelligent tool for early grape quality prediction based on agroclimatic conditions in vineyards. The project is co-financed by the Basque Government's Department of Economic Development, Sustainability, and the Environment and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), with a total grant of €72,165.25.

Description

Data collection on ripening and harvest timing monitoring from a multitude of plots across several wineries will be used to establish a predictive model for each plot, primarily based on climate data. A general model will then be developed and validated with data from a cooperative, potentially serving the rest of the wineries in Rioja Alavesa.

Description of activities

During the development of the project, grape quality data from 8 campaigns (2015-2022) and the meteorological data corresponding to this period have been collected and analyzed, so that the most relevant correlations between quality parameters and meteorological variables have been determined, and predictive models have been developed that allow:

  • Estimate the physical and chemical parameters of the grapes based on climatic variables during the first months of the campaign, prior to the first grape analyses.
  • Predict the evolution of grape quality parameters over the next 7 days, based on previously taken measurements and the evolution of meteorological data over a given period, i.e., from the last grape analysis to the time of the estimate.

To train the models, three different learning techniques were tested, comparing the results of each of them, and selecting those that best fit the predictive models.

Objectives

The project's objective is to develop a new intelligent tool for early grape quality prediction based on agroclimatic conditions in the vineyards. Data from ripening and harvest timing monitoring have been collected from numerous plots at several wineries to establish a predictive model for each plot based primarily on climate data. A general model will then be developed and validated with data from a cooperative, potentially serving the rest of the wineries in Rioja Alavesa.
