Biodiversity Foundation Project: Promoting sustainable rural tourism to revitalize rural Spain

Description of activities

The work will be addressed through training and advice:

1. Creation of working groups with participatory but targeted sessions involving all the aforementioned stakeholders to identify needs and barriers, address problems, and find agreed-upon and coordinated solutions. Five face-to-face, five-hour advisory sessions will be organized, one in each of the five autonomous communities where the project will be developed, targeting a total of 66 recipients.

2. Courses on policies and actions for the transformation of rural tourism toward a model of environmental and social sustainability. There will be five two-hour distance learning courses aimed at approximately 25 people (five from each Autonomous Community) representing public institutions, administrations, and companies and entities in the rural tourism sector in the five Autonomous Communities where we will be working. These participants will be some of the same people who will later participate in the personalized consultations, so these recipients do not count toward the total number of net participants.

3. More personalized remote consulting services aimed at rural tourism establishments and businesses, local development associations, government agencies, and other related entities (some of which also participated in the in-person sessions, but with different people) to address their business transformation, incorporating structural changes into their business models, shifting toward a green economy, and embracing sustainability. This targeted consulting service will also be provided across the five regional governments, targeting a total of 43 recipients.

Specifically, with this project, we will focus on the following regions, with a total of 109 recipients who will receive technical training, advice, and guidance to improve their capabilities to navigate the transformation process:

· Andalusia (Almeria, Jaen, Granada, Cordoba, Malaga, Seville, Cadiz and Huelva).· Castile-La Mancha (Guadalajara, Toledo, Cuenca, Ciudad Real and Albacete).· Extremadura (Caceres and Badajoz).· Madrid.· Murcia.

Objectives

The project "Boosting Sustainable Rural Tourism to Revitalize Rural Spain" aims to increase the knowledge and skills of workers in rural tourism-related organizations so they can offer differentiated sustainable products that increase their appeal, boost tourism activity, and mitigate rural depopulation. Both objectives are in line with the priorities of the Ministry for Ecological Transition. Furthermore, the project is part of the strategies of the High Commissioner for the 2030 Agenda and the Spanish Sustainable Development Network, one of whose lines of action is to assist governments in diagnosing local sustainable development challenges.
