Description
Develop sustainable non-plastic packaging for fourth and fifth range products that preserve food quality, reduce waste and promote a more sustainable food industry.
Contextual description
The current plastic packaging used by agri-food companies for their products in supermarkets is primarily made from non-biodegradable and non-biodegradable plastic materials due to their excellent food preservation properties and ease of manufacture. However, the use of single-use plastics is not a sustainable option, and a paradigm shift in food packaging is necessary. Therefore, the main challenge of this project is the elimination of non-biodegradable and non-biodegradable plastic materials from the packaging used by the Navarre agri-food industry.
Results
Development of sustainable packaging, with over 80% cardboard, reducing plastic use. Validation of packaging with functional barrier solutions sufficient to maintain food shelf life. Design of packaging capable of withstanding industrial processes (forming, stacking, packaging, pasteurization). Increased shelf life of chilled fish through improvements in packaging, refrigeration equipment, and lighting filters. Intelligent RFID-based system for efficient management of stored items. Validation of a scalable industrial inspection system with automatic rejection of defective packaging through the integration of machine vision and deep learning.
