NATURSMOKE Operational Group: New disinfectant technologies based on active ingredients obtained from food by-products for the control of phytopathogens in greenhouses and post-harvest

  • Type Operational group
  • Status In progress
  • Execution 2023 -2025
  • Assigned Budget 291.639,00 €
  • Scope Autonómico
  • Autonomous community Andalucía
  • Project website GO NATURSMOKE
Abstract

This Task Force (TF) proposes a novel solution for managing phytosanitary diseases in greenhouses and post-harvest facilities in crops protected under plastic, due to the high losses caused by pathogens such as Botrytis cinerea, Podosphaera aphanis, Leveillula taurica, Pseudomonas syringae, Alternaria spp., Penicillium spp., and Fusarium oxysporum. The aim of this study is to develop novel fumigant products to efficiently control these diseases using natural active ingredients derived from food by-products.

This new technology will use natural antimicrobials that are safe for consumers and the environment, reducing the use of chemicals, water, and energy while maintaining the quality and safety standards of the final product demanded by the market. To achieve its objective, the consortium is made up of a multidisciplinary and balanced team of three SMEs with diverse expertise in the agri-food sector and the project: BIOPLAGEN (Seville), DOMCA (Granada), and Agricultura y Ensayo (Seville).

Furthermore, the GO has a recognized knowledge generation agent, the University of Granada, which guarantees the necessary know-how to address the objectives set. Finally, the GO is established with the support of the national Plant Biotechnology Technology Platform (INVEGEN), which will lead and coordinate dissemination and outreach activities.

Description of activities
  1. DOCUMENTARY PHASE Study of new active ingredients with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity obtained from plant by-products. Experimental design of the compounds to be tested to determine their biological activity. Experimental design of toxicity assays on the C. elegans surrogate model.
  2. EXPERIMENTAL PHASE
  • Activity 1. Obtaining and selecting active ingredients and developing formulations.
  • Activity 2. Evaluation of the disinfectant efficacy and viability of the product.
  • Activity 3. Validation of the new smoke product.
  1. FINAL PROJECT REPORT WRITING PHASE Technical and administrative coordination Drafting of interim and final reports.
  2. DISSEMINATION PHASE. Execution of the Dissemination and Outreach Plan
Objectives

The objective of the GO-NATURSMOKE project is to develop new fumigant products that, with minimal water consumption, contribute to the efficient control of phytopathogenic diseases in greenhouses and post-harvest, using natural active ingredients derived from food by-products.

This new technology will use antimicrobials of natural origin, safe for consumers and the environment, allowing to reduce the use of chemicals, water and energy, while maintaining the levels of quality and safety of the final product that the market demands.
