Operational Group: Creation of an APP to improve the efficiency of pistachio cultivation through precision agriculture

  • Type Operational group
  • Status In progress
  • Execution 2023 -2025
  • Assigned Budget 239.744,00 €
  • Scope Autonómico
  • Autonomous community Andalucía
  • Project website GO DRISPISTACHO
Abstract

This project is necessary because pistachio cultivation is becoming an increasingly attractive alternative for farmers, especially in deprived areas of Andalusia, such as the northern provinces of Seville, Córdoba, Jaén, Granada, and Almería. However, despite its potential, pistachios are still largely unknown in this region, and studies are needed to improve their management and crop efficiency, similar to those already conducted by the CSIC in Castilla-La Mancha. The application of new technologies and clean analytical tools can help determine crop needs and correct nutritional deficiencies to ensure maximum productivity.

In this sense, the creation of an app that provides crucial information for plot management and the exact fertilizer dosage required for each area will be a basic support tool for pistachio farmers. Furthermore, this app will include information on production by area, according to soil type or crop type, allowing for an understanding of crop profitability and viability.

In short, the project is necessary to fully exploit the potential of pistachio cultivation in Andalusia, improve crop efficiency, and provide farmers with support tools that allow them to understand the crop's needs, maximize profitability, and obtain a top-quality product. Furthermore, the implementation of new technologies and clean analytical tools can help make pistachio cultivation a sustainable, profitable alternative with promising prospects for the region.

Description of activities
  • Activity 1 involves creating a web platform that will store all the data relevant to pistachio production in Andalusia.
  • In Activity 2, obtaining the most accurate image possible is essential to accurately diagnose the plantation's condition. Therefore, a satellite image of the plantation will be obtained, and an algorithm will be developed to match pistachios with similar physiological and nutritional status.
  • Activity 3 proposes the development of foliar analysis methodologies based on intact leaves using NIRS or LIBS devices. These methods allow data to be obtained in less time, and even, if portable devices are used, to obtain foliar nutritional profile data from the same plot. Therefore, once representative samples from each area of the plot have been selected using the segmentation algorithm, these samples will be analyzed using the new analytical tools to determine the nutritional status of each area at each stage of the pistachio growth cycle. This will allow the appropriate treatment to be applied to each area to obtain the best possible production.
  • In Activity 4, the DRIS-based fertilization system will be used to design the fertilization methodology. This is a useful tool for assessing the nutritional status of pistachio crops. To carry out this process, sampling will be carried out from April to October, since the pistachio tree is leafless from November to February, due to its deciduous nature. By collecting data from representative samples of each area of the plot, a recommendation can be made on the best possible treatment based on the data obtained from the analysis.
Contextual description

The project is necessary to fully exploit the potential of pistachio cultivation in Andalusia, improve crop efficiency, and provide farmers with support tools that allow them to understand the crop's needs, maximize profitability, and obtain a top-quality product. Furthermore, the implementation of new technologies and clean analytical tools can help make pistachio cultivation a sustainable, profitable alternative with promising prospects for the region.

Objectives

Improve production efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and increase the profitability of pistachio cultivation through the implementation of a digital tool to support farmers in applying the DRIS methodology using a precision agriculture approach and a clean analysis methodology.
