AL-AQUA Operational Group: Biotechnological strategies to increase the resistance to water stress of almond crops under dryland conditions

  • Type Operational group
  • Status In progress
  • Execution 2023 -2025
  • Assigned Budget 206.008,00 €
  • Scope Autonómico
  • Autonomous community Andalucía
Abstract
  • To identify and describe plant materials with greater resilience to water stress in an updated manner so they can be implemented in almond farms grown in different geographical locations under arid climate regimes, ensuring the future sustainability of almond production in Andalusia.
  • Implement agricultural practices that allow for soil biofortification through the application of beneficial microorganisms, which will promote improved adaptability and root development in existing plantations.
  • Improve soil water retention capacity, optimizing the capture and efficiency of rainfall resources and facilitating their availability to rainfed crops.
  • As a result of the project, a practical manual will be developed indicating the recommended protocol to follow for designing and using different agroecological practices, either individually or in combination, in arid environments to maximize the water retention capacity of almond soils managed under dry land conditions.
  • The project will serve to raise awareness and enhance the role played by women in the almond growing sector by offering guided tours of demonstration experiences on important and significant dates for women in rural areas.

Objectives

The overall objective of the AL-AQUA project is to evaluate, develop and demonstrate the effectiveness of different biotechnological strategies to promote and increase the resilience and resistance to water stress of almond crops managed under dryland regimes in the face of meteorological variations and floods caused by climate change, with the ultimate goal of selecting a package of biotechnological solutions that can be successfully implemented in different almond production areas both in Andalusia and in other autonomous communities in southeastern Spain.
