Description

A winegrowing terroir is a concept that refers to a space where collective knowledge develops about the interactions between an identifiable physical and biological environment and the viticultural practices applied, which confer distinctive characteristics to the wines produced in that space. It includes specific characteristics of the soil, topography, climate, landscape, and biodiversity.

This project aims to establish criteria for defining the production areas of superior quality wines within the territories of three designations of origin, and to generate an application for managing information of various types (physical, climatic, geographic, regulatory, administrative, historical, etc.) to enhance the value of these productions.

Description of activities
  • Review information on historical and empirical payments, geographic information system (GIS) options, and decision support systems for application in the project.
  • Field analysis to establish soil and climate conditions for the delimitation of the payments.
  • Meetings with farmers and wineries to agree on the information generated and the zoning implemented. / Development and testing of a GIS-based app for the technical and administrative management of information for each payment and to support decision-making by the various stakeholders in the chain: farmer, winery, winery, and Regulatory Council.
Objectives

Identify and characterize the premium vineyards and areas of the "Montilla-Moriles", "Málaga y Sierras de Málaga" and "Condado de Huelva y Vino Naranja del Condado de Huelva" PDOs, based on objective data, allowing for differential treatment of the grapes from these vineyards to enhance the premium quality of their production.

This information will be available through a digital tool with georeferenced information, as a decision-support system for the various stakeholders of the three designations of origin (regulatory councils, winegrowers, wineries).
