Description

The implementation of green infrastructure in Spain is inherently innovative, with exemplary examples at the national level such as the Vitoria Green Belt, the Valencian Orchard Protection Plan, the Llobregat Agricultural Park, and the work being done by the InterVegas Federation to protect the most fertile and fragile soils. We propose a regional-scale approach to addressing the deficient territorial planning in the Community of Madrid. Green infrastructure is currently one of the most widely used territorial planning tools in major European cities, providing a distinctive identity and quality of life for citizens.

Description of activities
  1. Cartographic analysis of soils of high agricultural value and underutilized and/or abandoned land in need of revitalization.
  2. Development of a territorial planning tool, the Southern Madrid Green Infrastructure Network, for the protection of agricultural areas in the Community of Madrid: planning and management of green infrastructure.
  3. Open School of Agrarian Landscape. Design of training programs in agroecological entrepreneurship, support and mentoring in traditional varieties and local practices. We will work within the context of Cultural Landscapes. Synergies and dissemination with other OGs will be developed.
Objectives

Protecting agricultural land allows us to rebuild the existing relationships between city and countryside. Our goal is to promote agriculture as a tool for economic diversification, social integration, and the sustainability of Madrid's territories. We propose the development of Green Infrastructure in the southern region of Madrid, positioning it as a benchmark in the Madrid food system through the revitalization of the agroecological production sector, agrifood transformation, and the reorientation of local consumption toward healthier habits. All this while maintaining a unique landscape through sustainable practices.

Results

The practical results are grouped into three groups:

The project will develop an innovative and integrative planning tool for agricultural spaces in the southern region of Madrid (ii), updating existing cartography and (i) facilitating its management and monitoring (i), establishing the basic needs and conditions for its feasibility, and will promote an Open School of Agricultural Landscape (iii) with training, support and demonstration actions highlighting local crops and traditional practices and will carry out dissemination actions, promoting agricultural activity through entrepreneurship, establishing population in the rural environment.

The stakeholders involved will be involved at all times in the adoption of local, regional, and district policies and the promotion of economic activities.
