Abstract

The olive sector generates large quantities of leaves as a by-product and its management has always consisted of crushing and burning them, which is not favourable for the environment.

Description

The olive sector generates large quantities of leaves as a by-product and its management has always consisted of crushing and burning them, which is not favourable for the environment.

The project involves the optimization of the extraction process of bioactive compounds present in the olive leaf and analysis of the extracts, the manufacture of a transportable pilot plant that can be installed in rural areas, the obtaining of a high added value product with different applications in the market, the adequate conservation of the solvent and its stability over time for its application in the extraction process and the demonstration that the application to different food matrices (PETFOOD and humans) improves the properties of these.

Description of activities
  • Obtaining the value-added product on a laboratory scale.
  • Process optimization.
  • Construction, assembly and commissioning of the pilot plant for the extraction of bioactive compounds.
  • Demonstration of the feasibility of the extraction process in a pilot plant.
  • Market study. Feasibility of applying the product in food matrices.
Objectives

Utilization of the by-product of the olive sector, the leaf, for the extraction of bioactive compounds with high added value through the application of green solvents.

Results
  1. Laboratory-scale optimization of the process for obtaining bioactive compounds.
  2. Construction of a modular and transportable pilot plant for the extraction of bioactive compounds.
  3. Demonstration of the viability of the extract production process in a pilot plant.
  4. Market study and feasibility of the application of the product in food matrices.

Additional information

The expected market impacts are as follows:

  • New plant-based ingredients for human consumption and animal feed.
  • Improving market activity, including the valorisation of olive leaf waste.

The acquisition of these ingredients will lead, compared to the current market offering: - High-quality food ingredients with suitable functional properties. - A new market for developed ingredients. - Positive environmental impact thanks to the recovery of by-products from olive processing. - Greater sustainability and competitiveness of the industry at an environmental and economic level through higher quality products and less waste loss.
