Description
The LAMBSKIN Operational Group was born from the real need to improve the quality and profitability of lambskin sales, as well as to modernize such a traditional sector, especially in key processes such as leather grading. The scope of the project could be even broader, as the activity would contribute to the settlement of rural populations and promote circular economy schemes, as lambskin is currently considered a byproduct.
GO LAMBSKIN proposes a pilot project to determine factors that can improve and standardize leather quality, as well as demonstrate the advantages of automated, standardized, and more precise and traceable leather grading. The current lack of technology is considered to hinder the sector's competitiveness.
Objectives
- Implement an automated grading system for lambskin produced in the Extremadura region.
- Conduct an in-depth study of the production and technical variables that affect leather quality, as well as categorize the defects that reduce its final value. Apply image analysis using machine learning techniques.
- Study nutritional or management strategies aimed at improving the quality of skin and wool by boosting the immune system, given that, as animals are farmed extensively, attacks by parasites and other pathogens result in product defects.
