Operational Group: Reducing milk production costs by optimizing the use of forage corn fiber
- Type Operational group
- Execution 2017
- Assigned Budget 38.426,00 €
- Scope Autonómico
- Autonomous community Galicia
- Main source of financing PEPAC 2014-2020
This Operational Group aims to increase profitability on Galician dairy farms by reducing milk production costs through optimizing the use of forage corn fiber.
Currently, Galician dairy farms are unable to meet their effective fiber needs, so most are forced to supplement their cattle's rations with straw purchased abroad.
The study aims to evaluate new techniques for longer chopping of corn silage and more precise grain processing. This will allow for better use of farms' own resources, corn silage, significantly reducing purchased feed and thus creating a more economical and environmentally friendly ration, as we reduce the need to transport straw over long distances. Another evaluation point of the project is to estimate the reduction in leachate produced in silage thanks to these new chopping techniques, thereby reducing potential environmental contamination and increasing the amount of feed available for livestock.
