Description

MONTE DIGITAL promotes an innovative methodology aimed at the digitalization of forests using Mobile Terrestrial Lidar for the inventory and monitoring of forest stands with high precision and low cost, facilitating decision-making in forest management. The final result is the software that obtains both dendro and dasometric parameters (AID-FOREST), working completely automatically and without the need to preprocess the Lidar point clouds.

Objectives
  • To validate the reliability of the inventory using Mobile Terrestrial Lidar (LTM) at the sample plot scale, using standard commercial software to process the point cloud obtained using LTM.
  • Generate algorithms for calculating dasometric variables based on the point cloud integrated into software based on artificial intelligence, which will be fully automatic.
  • Application and validation of algorithms at a larger scale (canton), evaluating the unlimited processing capacity of very large surfaces.
Results
  • Obtaining dasometric parameters using classical inventory techniques and the LTM technique. Quantification of total costs and comparison of both techniques.
  • Development of AID-FOREST software, specific for processing point clouds from the LTM at two scales: plot and canton.
  • Validation of AID-FOREST software and comparison with commercial software.
  • Complete inventory of the cantons based on the LTM digitization of the two forests studied, processed using the AID-FOREST software at canton level and obtaining total costs.
  • The software turned out to be fully automatic, with no limitations on the forest area to be inventoried and with extremely high precision.
