Demographic challenge in rural areas and promotion of generational renewal, online

Unións Agrarias-UPA will hold the tenth edition of the technical conference “Demographic Challenge in Rural Areas and Promotion of Generational Change” on December 17, 2025 , from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. , in online format , within the framework of the program “Living Territories: Environmental Regeneration, Generational Change and Demographic Challenge” , financed by the CAP Strategic Plan 2023-2027 .

This event aims to raise awareness about the abandonment of rural areas and agroforestry activities , one of the main factors contributing to depopulation, as well as to offer innovative solutions to ensure the continuity of agricultural holdings .

The session will analyze the current situation of rural areas in Galicia, Castile and León, Castile-La Mancha, and Extremadura , addressing population aging, the loss of young people to rural areas, and the structural causes of rural abandonment . It will also examine the impact of farm closures and the evolution of agricultural and forest land, incorporating a gender perspective and the role of rural women .

One of the key sessions will be dedicated to new models for transferring farm ownership , such as long-term leases, joint ventures, intergenerational mentoring, land banks, and platforms connecting generations. The day will conclude with practical case studies of success and a session on sustainability and efficiency measures in agroforestry , covering tools such as digitalization, energy efficiency, and public support.

This activity is aimed at professionals in the agri-food and forestry sector interested in generational change and sustainable rural development .
