ANIMAL WELFARE ON LIVESTOCK FARMS ONLINE

Addressed to:

Aimed at owners, farm workers, and anyone wishing to enter the livestock industry.

Goals:

Obtaining an animal welfare training certificate. Training will be achieved by attending the course and passing an exam, and will be accredited by the issuance of a card by the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food of the Government of Aragon.

Content:

GENERAL MODULE.

• Introduction. General aspects of animal welfare legislation and training of personnel responsible for animal care and handling. Law 11/2003, of March 19, on animal protection of the Autonomous Community of Aragon. Society and animal welfare. Situation in the European Union.

• Animal anatomy and physiology. Animal behavior. Animal welfare and adaptation. Health, stress, illness. Predisposing and determining causes of disease.
  Practical aspects of animal welfare. Buildings, facilities, and equipment. Animal handling. Responses to animal injuries and diseases. Law 8/2003, of April 24, on animal health: Health alert plans, mandatory slaughter, identification, registration, and health documentation.
  

  SPECIFIC MODULE

• Specific legislation on animal protection on farms and on the slaughter of animals outside of slaughterhouses.
  Species physiology and its relationship to behavior. Food and water requirements. Surgical interventions, mutilations, and animal treatments.
  Animal welfare and production. Influence of animal welfare on the production and quality of animal products.
  Economic importance of the application of animal welfare legislation.
  Design, construction, facilities and equipment of the farms.
  Health plans, alert networks, management, emergency animal care, and biosecurity measures on the farm. Occupational safety criteria.
  Responsibilities of animal keeper. General conditions of transport and applicable regulations. Animals fit for transport. Means of transport, transport documentation, vehicle cleaning and disinfection.
  Workshops on practical cases.
