The LIFE Superbiodiesel Project aims to demonstrate, at pilot plant scale, the advantages of producing biofuels from methanol under supercritical conditions using new catalytic technology. Modulating the catalytic reaction process will allow the production of two types of biofuels:
- Biofuels with glycerol as a by-product (standard transesterification reaction).
- Advanced biodiesel containing glycerol (with significant minimization of unwanted by-products).
The revised Renewable Energy Directive 2018/2001/EU (RED II) has raised the EU's overall target for the use of renewable energy sources for 2030 to 32%, along with a greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction target of 40%. For transport, the secondary target is to supply a minimum of 14% of the energy consumed in road and rail transport as renewable energy by 2030. Within the 14% secondary target for transport, there is a specific target for advanced biofuels produced from feedstocks listed in Parts A and B of Annex IX. This includes feedstocks produced from waste animal fats. The contribution of advanced biofuels as a percentage of final energy consumption in the transport sector is projected to be at least 6.8% in 2030.
The overall objective of this project is to implement an improved, sustainable, and environmentally friendly process to produce eco-efficient biodiesel, in compliance with current directives and regulations, using raw materials derived from animal waste, thus applying the principles of the circular economy.
