The overall goal of the LIFE RedBosques_Clima project is to achieve greater adaptive capacity in forests to climate change by promoting forestry with conservation objectives (promoting maturity, increasing heterogeneity and diversity) under the umbrella of ecosystem-based adaptation.
Forests are one of the ecosystems most sensitive to climate change. They are also one of the most important ecosystems in Europe, due to their size (the EU's forest area covers around 42% of its territory), their diversity, their significant economic importance, and the wide range of ecosystem services they provide, including their important role in CO2 sequestration. Spain has almost 28 million hectares of forest (almost 55% of the national territory), with 27 different types of forest habitats of Community interest.
Although European forest area has increased in recent decades, their situation remains very fragile. The assessment report on the conservation status of habitats and species under the Habitats Directive 2013-2018 (Article 17) indicates that 95% of forest habitats of Community interest in Spain have an unfavorable conservation status, compared to 78% in Europe. The same report identifies inadequate forest management as the main factor of pressure and threat to Spanish and European forest habitats.
- Promote good adaptation practices in forest management based on natural solutions through tools that facilitate their implementation.
- Implement pilot actions to improve the adaptive capacity of various types of forests.
- Promote the transferability of project results and encourage their replicability throughout the country.
- Reference stand network: a comprehensive network of 50 representative stands of each forest type, representing situations of low vulnerability to climate change.
- Online tool for assessing forest vulnerability.
- Quality standard for forest adaptation actions: protocol for the design, implementation, and evaluation of adaptation measures in forests.
- Management plan with adaptation objectives for the configuration of a resilient mosaic on 500 ha.
- Adaptation actions implemented in 14 ha of Mediterranean forest.
- Improving adaptive capacity in 80 ha of forestry.
- Restoration of forest habitats of community interest on 174 ha.
- Ecological monitoring plan to quantify the effectiveness of adaptation measures.
- 10,000 new hectares under management plans with adaptation objectives.

LIFE RedBosques_Clima will improve knowledge about the effectiveness of forest adaptation measures and provide tools to support decision-making. It is also a project for ecosystem-based adaptation solutions, with multiple benefits for the conservation of natural heritage and for the economy, as more resilient forests can support a more resilient economy. In this way, LIFE RedBosques_Clima will contribute to the implementation of the EU strategy on climate change adaptation and the 2030 biodiversity strategy.
