Description

The LIFE NextFUMIGREEN project aims to significantly increase the use of natural fumigants based on active substances extracted from plants to control whitefly populations in intensively grown greenhouse horticultural crops.

Contextual description

Chemical pesticides continue to have an impact on the environment: their use has increased by 50% worldwide, reaching around 2.5 million tons per year over the past 30 years. They are also known to cause cancer and fetal malformations and persist in the environment for many years. However, for decades, fumigant biocides have been commonly used for public health, food hygiene, and animal health purposes. Synthetic pesticides dominate the market due to their effectiveness, but natural compounds can also be used to control agricultural pests and pathogens. These biopesticides are obtained from animals, plants, and microorganisms such as bacteria, cyanobacteria, and microalgae.

Whiteflies are a particular problem for the vast majority of crops, causing various types of damage and a wide range of diseases. Furthermore, in recent years, they have developed resistance to control products. However, studies have shown that pyrethrum-based smoke products can be effective against whiteflies. The development of new products based on natural substances falls within EU legislation and national plans for the sustainable use of plant protection products. If these new natural products are developed as fumigants, the efficacy of these products will be more effective, faster, and safer, compared to the use of liquid products traditionally applied to crops by foliar application. The active ingredient pyrethrins, with a low toxicological profile, is currently approved for use as an insecticide.

Objectives
  • Develop a range of natural fumigant formats adapted to the different characteristics of the greenhouses in which they will be applied, taking into account dimensions and morphology to ensure optimal dispersion of the active ingredients.
  • Analyze at least three new phytosystems that could help expand the use of the already registered pesticide and respond to other pests such as Tuta absoluta.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the new product under field conditions, especially in highly airtight experimental greenhouses, fine-tuning its application and developing conservation, transportation, and storage protocols.
  • Train greenhouse growers on the use of fumigant technology in general and new fumigants.
  • Analyze the environmental impacts of pesticide use on greenhouse crops, developing life-cycle analyses of natural fumigants and establishing comparisons with other biopesticides and pesticides.
  • Define a set of pest control indicators associated with the use of sensors that provide farmers with sufficient information to determine the best pest control options, minimizing pesticide use.
Achieve positive environmental impacts by replacing synthetic-based pesticides with natural-based fumigants.
  • Report on the efficacy of bioactive pesticides under controlled and real-life conditions.
  • Develop a plan for the commercial development of the FUMIGREEN formula, leading to its eventual replacement of chemical pesticides.
Results

The development of natural fumigants for agricultural use will improve horticultural crop production, reduce environmental and occupational risks associated with crop treatments, and open up a sustainable business opportunity in the agricultural sector.
