Description

The Life-AIs project, Fede, is joining forces with Agerpix, a digital agronomic services provider specializing in data processing and predictive models, to "see" crops by capturing images with 3D cameras and processing them with AI. The accuracy of the data generated from this valuable visual information allows for monitoring the status of crops and executing highly precise field treatments and tasks. This information will be used to adjust crop management practices and the use of agricultural machinery on three farms in Spain that produce grapes, olives, and pistachios.

Contextual description

The European Green Deal aims to transform the EU economy, requiring new policies on clean energy supply across the economy, including policies on taxation, production and consumption, large-scale infrastructure, transport, food and agriculture, construction, and social benefits.

The Life-AIs project enables producers to significantly reduce their use of agricultural inputs, such as pesticides, fertilizers, water, diesel, and electricity, enabling the transition to net-zero emissions agriculture. It contributes to food security and “a prosperous and inclusive society in which economic growth is decoupled from resource use,” as described in the European Green Deal.

Objectives

The Life-Als project aims to combine technologies from FEDE and partner beneficiary AGERPIX, such as AI post-processing, to gain a better overview of crop characteristics. This information will be used to adjust crop management practices and the use of agricultural machinery, resulting in savings in pesticides, fertilizers, water, and diesel. The approach will be demonstrated on three farms in Spain that produce grapes, olives, and pistachios.

Results
  • Savings in water (3,331,317 m3/year), energy (2 GWh/year), pesticides and fertilizers (1,639,376 kg/year) and GHG emissions (604 tons of CO2eq/year).
  • Savings of €294 per hectare per year on Agroptimum (pistachio), €94 on Fournier (grape) and €122 on Canena (olive).
  • Socioeconomic analysis showing the profitability of the project approach at three demonstration sites, triggering additional investments in two more AI hardware units at each.
  • At least three Life-AIs hardware units in operation on each farm, and at least three certified distributors and 10 replicas outside Spain by the end of the project.
  • Demonstration of the financial sustainability of each partner.
