Abstract
Strategy and Action Plan for a Sustainable and Eco-efficient Wine Sector Priority: 2 - Promote social cohesion and territorial and demographic balance in the SUDOE through innovation and transformation of productive sectors Objective: 1.1 Develop and improve research and innovation capacities and assimilate advanced technologies A Strategy and Action Plan will be developed to achieve a sustainable and eco-efficient wine sector in the SUDOE area. This strategy will serve as a guide for the wine sector and the authorities concerned in achieving appropriate land use and local resource management, and will become a model for […]
Description

The SUDOE region has the largest vineyard area in the European Union. Over the next three years (2025–2028), the Soil&WineResidues project will work to promote a more sustainable wine production model based on the principles of the circular economy.

Furthermore, the project will identify the factors that promote or hinder the implementation of a circular economy and eco-efficiency model in the sector. The project aims to boost the development of rural areas through the efficient use of resources, attracting human capital and strengthening the competitiveness and resilience of the wine sector in the face of climate change and future crises. The Soil&WineResidues Consortium comprises 15 entities with extensive experience in various areas related to viticulture, the agroecological health of the system, and sustainability.

Objectives

The project's objective is to achieve soil sustainability through the eco-efficient in situ use of lignocellulosic waste (LCR) generated in vineyards to improve soil health and quality, develop commercial products and generate renewable energy, thereby reducing dependence on external inputs and improving the agroecological health of the viticultural system.

To address this challenge, the state of the art of vineyard soils, their health/quality status and the situation of their ecosystem services will be analyzed, along with the current management of soil-vineyard systems and the measures to be implemented to achieve the sustainability or recovery of these systems, highlighting the potential of RLC within the eco-efficiency-biorefinery approach.
