Description

This first year of the project has already borne fruit. On the one hand, a transnational assessment of the irrigation situation has been carried out to inform the future strategy. One of the most valuable sources of information came from farmers. Surveys were launched in Spanish, Portuguese, and French regions to gather their opinions on this issue, which remains highly relevant in southwestern Europe. More than 200 farmers responded to a detailed questionnaire, providing a solid foundation for guiding the future strategy.

At the same time, a number of practical initiatives have been launched. These include the characterization of digital irrigation solutions, which should help farmers choose the technology best suited to their needs. A first phase has already been completed with the publication of a list of the leading digital irrigation solutions. The list covers a wide range of technologies. Among the most common are sensors, which are used to determine the condition of the soil, plants, or atmosphere, enabling optimal irrigation decisions.

But the available digital solutions go beyond data collection and also offer in-depth support with irrigation management software. In the second year of the project, not only will the transnational strategy be finalized and the irrigation technology selection tool created, but other actions will also be launched to benefit farmers and, consequently, society as a whole.

Objectives

Smart Green Water is a project that aims to accelerate the digitalization of agricultural irrigation to save water in the face of dwindling supplies caused by climate change. To achieve this, Smart Green Water is developing a transnational strategy with all stakeholders to define the key elements of the necessary transformation of irrigation. Furthermore, a series of innovative actions are being implemented in various regions, with the ultimate goal of helping farmers adopt the best digital irrigation solutions.
