RESILIENT VINES addresses the common challenge of adapting viticulture in the rural SUDOE region to the effects of climate change, through agroecological and sustainable regenerative viticulture practices, and innovative solutions and technologies, in order to improve the biodiversity of the SUDOE region and preserve the natural heritage by reducing the use of plant protection products.
This will promote the adoption of techniques adapted to the SUDOE region by winegrowers and scientific and technological organizations. The project's pilot activities are designed to leverage transnational cooperation through the Living Labs network, focusing on assessing functional biodiversity (arthropods, soil microbiology, beneficial flora and fauna), agroecological vineyard management (cover crops), and incorporating technologies to reduce pesticide use and irrigation water consumption.
To this end, six pilot projects will be carried out in regions with representative climates (western maritime, continental, and Mediterranean) of the SUDOE (Southwest) region, specifically in Tarragona and the Balearic Islands (Mediterranean), the Trás-os-Montes and Douro Denominations of Origin (continental), and Cognac and Bordeaux (western maritime). The RESILIENT VINES consortium comprises ten entities (four Spanish, four Portuguese, and two French) with a multi-stakeholder approach, aiming to develop and transfer the results to all stakeholders in the wine value chain within the SUDOE region, who will be able to benefit from the project's outcomes. One of the most innovative aspects of RESILIENT VINES is its ecosystem-based approach to vineyards, implementing holistic management and applying solutions and technologies to improve soil quality, the ecosystem, and the sustainability of production.
The main objective of RESILIENT VINES is to validate and adapt the best practices of regenerative viticulture to different soils and climates within the SUDOE territory, which dedicates more than 1.6 Mha to viticulture, in order to develop regional strategies and policies and transfer the results, through SUDOE Think Tanks and training activities.
