Description

The EUBURN-RISK project aims to strengthen the capacity to prevent and manage the risks associated with forest fires in Southwest Europe (SUDOE), thereby protecting vulnerable stakeholders (population, ecosystems, and territorial assets). EUBURN-RISK intends to develop a digital tool to better anticipate both direct and indirect risks. The project seeks to enhance the capacity of public authorities to consider environmental impacts when developing land-use policies and to facilitate civil protection by providing key information in real time. Initially, the project proposes acquiring the necessary data to improve scientific knowledge on forest fires through a monitoring campaign across the SUDOE region.

Subsequently, the project will develop and evaluate, in real-world scenarios, a digital tool to simulate the spread of forest fires and the concentrations of emitted air pollutants. EUBURN-RISK is based on a transnational cooperation strategy between researchers, public operators, and operational fire services to create a robust structure that benefits all parties. Through a comprehensive and innovative approach, the project aims to enhance the potential of the Southwest region in terms of understanding and modeling the spread of forest fires and the compounds emitted, by bringing together different interfaces (fire, ecosystem, atmosphere) and spatial scales previously studied independently.
