Description

The mountain regions of southwestern Europe are experiencing a critical situation of depopulation and aging, making it essential to revitalize their social and productive structure. The Cultur-Monts project, thanks to funding from the Interreg Sudoe 2021-27 program, addresses this challenge by promoting the heritage associated with mountain cultural landscapes.

In recent decades, archaeology has shown that the mountainous regions of southwestern Europe are not only natural spaces teeming with biodiversity, but also hold a significant cultural legacy resulting from intense human activity. However, this heritage is little known and has been undervalued as a tool for revitalization, innovation, and the sustainable transformation of these territories.

For three years (2024-2026), the Cultur-Monts project will foster the creation of an international cooperative network between France, Spain, and Portugal aimed at developing joint strategies for the enhancement and utilization of cultural heritage as a resource for sustainable territorial development. We will work in five diverse areas: Puy de Dôme-Lozère (Massif Central), Ripollès-Cerdanya (Eastern Pyrenees, Catalonia), Babia region (León), Camín Real de la Mesa region (Asturias), and the Peneda-Gerês mountain range (Northern Spain). Access all our social media here.

Objectives

The objective is to offer new development opportunities to mountain communities, improving their quality of life, territorial cohesion, fostering the self-esteem of the local population and increasing the capacities of public bodies to attract visitors, integrate new populations and retain young people in their territories.
