Abstract
The AQUAGRI-KNOW project will improve water management on farms by leveraging the results of the EIP-AGRI operational groups (OGs).
Description

EU water resources are under pressure due to climate change and poor management, with the agri-food sector using up to 60% of this water. While the need to optimize resources is recognized, the integration of sustainable solutions into agricultural practices remains uncertain. With this in mind, the EU-funded AQUAGRI-KNOW project will improve on-farm water management by leveraging the results of the EIP-AGRI Operational Groups (OGs).

It addresses water scarcity and quality through four strategies: water use, water-smart crops, water-soil interface, and water reuse. The project will compile information from the EIP-AGRI OGs, address end-user needs and challenges, generate tailored knowledge for farmers, facilitate knowledge flow, and maximize cross-border impact. The project envisions a sustainable future for EU agriculture.

Description of activities

AQUAGRI-KNOW systematically adapts, improves and develops practical knowledge through a five-step methodology:

  1. Knowledge gathering and standardization to compile the results of EIP-AGRI's OGs and beyond.
  2. Contextualization and alignment to integrate the needs, barriers, challenges, and opportunities of end users.
  3. Translation and adaptation to create a customized knowledge-sharing center for farmers and professionals.
  4. Shared exchange to facilitate the flow of knowledge.
  5. Interconnection and expansion to boost cross-border impact and extend the lifespan of the knowledge generated. In addition, an Ambassadors Program will be established, which will transfer knowledge to enable the adoption of innovative solutions in new locations.
Objectives

The European Union's (EU) water resources are increasingly under pressure from climate change and inefficient management, with the agri-food sector accounting for between 40% and 60% of water use. Despite recognizing the need to optimize resources, the integration of innovative sustainable solutions into agricultural practices remains weak. AQUAGRI-KNOW, led by a multi-stakeholder consortium of 12 partners from 5 EU countries, aims to address efficient on-farm water management by expanding the outcomes of the EIP-AGRI OGs.

AQUAGRI-KNOW's efforts have been carefully chosen to address water scarcity and quality issues, focusing on four strategies that ensure a circular water value chain (S1. Water Use, S2. Water-Smart Crops, S3. Water-Soil Interface, and S4. Water Reuse). AQUAGRI-KNOW systematically adapts, improves, and develops practical knowledge through a five-step methodology:

  4. Sharing and exchanging to facilitate the flow of knowledge.
  5. Networking and scaling to boost cross-border impact and increase the lifespan of generated knowledge. AQUAGRI-KNOW's impact is transformative, modernizing the agri-food sector by improving professionals' access to easy-to-understand, practice-oriented knowledge. AQUAGRI-KNOW empowers farmers to make informed decisions, fosters cross-border collaboration, and develops a comprehensive and scalable framework applicable to similarly impacted regions worldwide.

In addition, an Ambassadors Program will be implemented, transferring knowledge to enable the adoption of innovative solutions in new locations, expanding AQUAGRI-KNOW's impact. Through these efforts, AQUAGRI-KNOW envisions a collaborative, informed, and sustainable future for EU agriculture.
