Pruning is essential for growing high-value crops, such as olive groves and vineyards, but it is labor-intensive and expensive. The EU-funded AgRimate project seeks to transform this practice by introducing an innovative and scalable solution tailored to smallholder farmers.
By integrating augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI), and robotics, AgRimate will address the challenges of manual tree pruning. Its AI module will leverage expert knowledge to improve tree pruning techniques, offering adaptive learning resources and real-time AR guidance.
The project also includes two robotic solutions designed to automate tasks and an assessment tool to evaluate their socioeconomic and environmental impact on farmers and rural communities, promoting sustainable and socially responsible agricultural practices.
The project seamlessly integrates two different robotic solutions: assisting the user with exoskeletons or performing tasks autonomously with a highly advanced robot. It also incorporates a comprehensive evaluation tool designed to assess the solution's impact not only on farmers but also on rural communities.
AgRimate focuses on transforming smallholder pruning tasks through the use of Augmented Reality (AR) and Robotics technologies, enriched with Artificial Intelligence (AI). By addressing the significant challenges and labor-intensive aspects of pruning in high-value crops such as olive groves and vineyards, AgRimate presents an innovative and scalable solution. This solution is based on an AI module capable of learning from expert human knowledge to address the challenges of tree pruning.
This module extends the solution's functionality through various tools, from a learning tool that adapts to the user's knowledge to an Augmented Reality solution that provides real-time guidance during the pruning process with a human at the center. It integrates seamlessly with two different robotic solutions, either assisting the user with exoskeletons or performing tasks autonomously with a highly advanced robot. Additionally, AgRimate incorporates a comprehensive evaluation tool designed to assess the solution's impact, not only on farmers but also on rural communities.
This holistic approach aims not only to improve productivity and resource efficiency, but also to enhance social inclusion and working conditions within the agricultural sector. By forging a consortium of leading research institutions, SMEs, and agricultural stakeholders from across Europe, AgRimate is at the forefront of cultivating sustainable, technologically advanced, and socially responsible farming practices. Ultimately, AgRimate stands as a beacon of innovation in agricultural technology, deeply aligned with the EU's broader goals of digital transformation, environmental sustainability, and socioeconomic equity, showing a way forward for future agriculture that prioritizes both yield and community well-being.
