Silvopastoralism is a common practice in Mediterranean socio-ecological systems, characterized by the presence of extensive livestock farming in forested areas. The consumption of vegetation from forest ecosystems provides goods and services to society, such as high-quality food products or the management of forest biomass and the associated risk of wildfires. In the Mediterranean Basin, the revaluation of silvopastoralism is particularly strategic, given that the region is marked by unmanaged forests and increasing vulnerability to wildfires due to climate change.
Therefore, a growing number of public administrations are implementing pastoral livestock farming experiments to control understory fuel. At the same time, the number of farmers practicing extensive livestock farming is declining throughout Europe. Therefore, in recent years, vocational training centers known as Shepherd Schools have been established, with the aim of training young people, whether from the agricultural sector or not, in the development of extensive agricultural projects that are economically viable and adapted to the needs of the 21st-century market. However, a low level of training in silvopastoralism for forest fire risk management has been detected, both theoretically and practically.
The methodology to be applied is based on the integration of the knowledge, experience, and expertise of all partners with the aim of developing a study module applicable to agricultural training centers. The methodology pursues the challenge of compiling and integrating theoretical content and practical cases drawn from international exchanges and the diversity of partners during short training programs, integrating different perspectives and approaches to silvopastoralism and landscape and forest fire management.
This project was created with the mission of creating a network of cooperation between Shepherd Schools, pastors, and administrations to exchange best practices in the development of silvopastoralism. Specifically, the project seeks to design and implement a silvopastoralism study module for Shepherd Schools and share successful experiences from participating regions.
The main expected outcome of the project is to expand the range of silvopastoralism training courses, thus promoting the development of its practice in forest fire risk contexts. At the same time, it is expected to strengthen the skills and capacities of professional farmers in silvopastoralism-based territorial management, as well as to analyze and document innovative public-private mechanisms that foster interest in silvopastoralism as a multifunctional tool with significant benefits for society.
