CultivEco Biodiversity Foundation Project: Cultivating the agroecological transition in the Mar Menor through good agricultural practices in organic production

Description

This project focuses on promoting the conversion to organic production and good agroecological practices on a 120-hectare network of farms with citrus crops, greenhouses, and arable land.

It develops a territorial approach for the transition toward agroecological models, including a roadmap for adopting good practices, training, capacity building, and support for the conventional agricultural sector.

Description of activities
  • Establishment of a network of flagship farms (60 ha) and pilot farms (120 ha) that serve as an example for continuous improvement and conversion of other farmers to reduce the impacts at source of agricultural activity in the Mar Menor watershed.
  • Analysis of existing agricultural systems to propose good practices and monitor their effectiveness.
  • Development of a territorialized digital manual adaptable to crop type and agroecosystem characteristics for the transition to organic production models with an agroecological approach.
  • Development of a roadmap for adopting good agroecological practices and converting to organic production.
Objectives

Reduce anthropogenic pressures and the impacts of agricultural activity in the Mar Menor watershed through pilot projects that implement and promote nature-based best practices and the conversion to organic production, driving a just ecological transition toward the sustainability and viability of agricultural systems, in balance with the associated high-value ecosystems.
