Biodiversity Foundation Project: RESILIENT ARRASTARIA: Measures for an agricultural adaptation plan to climate change

Description

Arrastaria is a rural area within the Natura 2000 Network (LIC-ES2110004) with a large area of land classified as a high strategic agricultural and livestock area, vulnerable to climate change, the impacts of which threaten the profitability and survival of the sector. Therefore, the Amurrio City Council has completed the "ARRASTARIA RESILIIENTE" project to increase the adaptive capacity of the valley's crops and pastures, mitigating climate change and improving the area's adaptive capacity. This initiative has been supported by the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition within the framework of its 2017 grant application period.

Description of activities

Various territorial investigations have been carried out. The first action consisted of preparing a prospective study on the foreseeable effects of climate change on crops, land uses, and current management sequences, with an assessment of their vulnerabilities and potential impacts on agriculture, livestock, native biodiversity, forests, soil, and tourism.

Three potential threats to this area were identified: frost impact, flood impact, and drought impact.

In addition, work was carried out to identify and locate wild plant species (mushrooms, berries, flowers, fruits, aromatic plants, medicinal plants, seeds, roots, etc.) that could be interesting for human consumption and could be used as a basis for developing new products, thus diversifying and strengthening farm income.

Objectives

Increase the adaptive capacity of the valley's crops and pastures, mitigating climate change and improving the area's adaptive capacity.

Results

The result of this analysis was a guide for implementing concrete short-term measures to improve the valley's prosperity in the face of climate change.
