Biodiversity Foundation Project: Promoting adaptation to climate change in protected areas

Description

Although the effects of climate change are already evident in protected areas, and scientific knowledge on the subject is abundant, initiatives aimed at addressing the challenges posed by climate change for their effective management are still very few.

In this regard, the Fernando González Bernáldez Foundation, with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation, has developed the project "Promoting Climate Change Adaptation in the Management of Spain's Protected Areas." This project aims to transfer scientific knowledge into management practice by providing useful tools that allow for the incorporation of climate change adaptation criteria into both planning tools and the design of conservation actions. To this end, through a participatory process involving protected area managers,

Description of activities

Development of a manual and online tool that, in addition to establishing terminology and defining the national and international context, proposes a procedure for ensuring that management plans consider climate change and adaptation options throughout the entire development process.

The procedure was implemented on a pilot basis in three case studies where the management plan is currently being drafted: Teide National Park, the Sierra de Santo Domingo Protected Landscape, and the Urbasa and Andía Special Protected Area (SAC). In addition, to encourage the application of this procedure, an Adaptation Action Award was launched, which was awarded to the Mount Matagalls forest management project in the Montseny Natural Park.

Objectives

Transfer scientific knowledge into management practice, providing useful tools that allow for the incorporation of climate change adaptation criteria into planning tools.
