Poultry farming, specifically duck farming, is an activity that depends largely on adaptation to climate change, as birds' biological cycles are strongly influenced by the climate. Therefore, it is essential to understand the effects and risks arising from climate change in order to ensure the viability of the operation and to anticipate decisions with the goal of maximizing resources and reducing costs.
The project has identified the negative effects of climate change on poultry farming through a life-cycle analysis methodology. COGAVI has designed a plan that will allow its duck farm to adapt to the consequences of climate change, primarily resulting from risks associated with sudden temperature changes, seasonal changes, increased parasite survival, drought, loss of pasture and soil, and increased energy consumption to maintain climatic conditions in the facilities.
Implementation of some of the adaptations, such as energy and water audits, carbon footprint calculations, the pilot implementation of drinking troughs to minimize water loss, and the installation of shaded areas to prevent evapotranspiration. Outside the scope of the project, the installation of photovoltaic panels to take advantage of the area's growing solar potential and improve water management efficiency is also noteworthy.
The objective of this project is to improve the adaptation to climate change of a poultry farm in Villamartín de Campos (Palencia).
