Biodiversity Foundation Project: Composting municipal waste to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Description

This Friends of the Earth Spain project aims to create compost from the organic portion of municipal waste. This is expected to reduce diffuse greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Description of activities
  • Compilation of the results obtained from the various collection and composting systems, including the total sum of data and the calculation of potential at the state level.
  • Calculation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions avoided by kilograms of organic matter diverted from landfills
  • Development of a best practices guide with conclusions and recommendations from the experiences.
Objectives

The initiative "Composting from municipal waste to reduce greenhouse gas emissions" aims to assess and analyze existing initiatives through the selective separation of the organic matter fraction of municipal waste and its subsequent treatment through composting.

This will allow for conclusions to be drawn that can be extrapolated to other municipalities regarding the different separation and treatment systems. The second objective relates to the project's intention to collaborate with compliance with the Landfill Directive 1999/31/EC, its transposition (RD 1481/2001), and with Law 22/11 on waste and contaminated soil, in its goal of achieving 50% recycling of the organic matter fraction of waste by 2020.
