The impact of climate change on beekeeping in Galicia and Extremadura is causing losses in the sector. Therefore, it is necessary to develop tools to help a key sector adapt to climate change, since bees, in addition to producing honey, are an essential pollinator, contributing to maintaining biodiversity and the yield of numerous agricultural crops. The National Climate Change Adaptation Plan (PNACC) proposes, in fact, addressing the impacts of beekeeping and its adaptation to climate change.
To achieve this adaptation to climate change in the sector, various activities have been developed. First, interviews were conducted with beekeeping professionals to learn firsthand about their problems and experiences related to climate change. Following the analysis of the interviews, two guides were developed, one for Galicia and one for Extremadura, which contain different adaptation and mitigation measures for both beekeepers and public authorities. To strengthen the implementation and dissemination of the proposed measures, 16 practical workshops were held in apiaries, 10 awareness-raising seminars were held, and an advisory service was made available to all interested parties to help them implement the adaptation measures individually.
Integrate climate change adaptation into the planning and decision-making of beekeeping professionals in Galicia and Extremadura, as well as the administrations involved in this sector.
Four indicators have been developed that have allowed us to monitor the impact of some of the adaptation measures. Three beekeepers collaborated in this experiment, implementing four of the adaptation measures proposed in the guidelines in their apiaries. The results were favorable for all four established indicators. This confirms that the proposed measures positively benefit beekeepers, fostering the development and competitiveness of the sector in the face of the effects of climate change.
