ARxMM Biodiversity Foundation Project: Regenerative Agriculture and Renaturalization: Looking at the Mar Menor

Description

This project develops two regenerative agriculture demonstration projects, on existing irrigated plots and on former irrigated plots converted to dryland, with at least a total of 20 hectares of agricultural land to produce environmental improvements, with scientific monitoring and evaluation.

Description of activities
  • Experimental recovery of traditional dryland crops.
  • Actions to enhance biodiversity, the presence of birds and terrestrial fauna, and the provision of ecosystem services.
  • Development of a resilient semi-arid herbaceous steppe or grassland, under the regenerative agriculture model controlled by holistic grazing management.
  • Outreach and awareness-raising in the agricultural sector, in schools, and in the towns surrounding the Mar Menor, including volunteering.
  • Training in agroecology and regenerative agriculture.
  • Dissemination and awareness-raising efforts on agroecology and regenerative agriculture targeting multiple stakeholders, including the agricultural, school, and neighborhood sectors.
Objectives

It aims to develop a demonstration project for converting agricultural plots in the Mar Menor Basin to regenerative agriculture. Specifically, the project will launch two experimental projects on various agricultural plots converted to a regenerative agriculture model, evaluating their results and transferability.

Another objective is to raise awareness about the need for a transition to more sustainable agriculture, disseminating this demonstration project within the agricultural sector and among the public, and promoting training in agroecology and regenerative agriculture.
