Description
The utilization of bioactive compounds from plant waste with potential application in human and plant health, promoting the transition to a circular economy.
Contextual description
Study of the potential application of these residues in different areas of the agri-food industry: Juices: residues generated in the extraction process, after washing and before pasteurization. Winegrowers and wineries: possible integrated vineyard management by reusing pruning waste. Canning industry, domestic use, and catering. Primary sector: Farmers could apply organic herbicides against weeds.
Results
Inhibition of the growth of pathogenic bacteria affecting humans and plants, depending on the type of residue, dosage, and product used to extract the compounds. High efficacy of mandarin, lemon, and cabbage residues against Rhizobium radiobacter, the causal agent of crown gall in crops. Inhibition of the growth of phytopathogenic and mycotoxin-producing fungi when applying aqueous extracts of residues. Maximum efficacy for citrus fruits against Penicillium griseofulvum and for lemons against Verticillium dahliae. Selective inhibition of weed (e.g., poppy) and crop (e.g., barley) seed germination when applying aqueous extracts of plant residues, depending on the type of residue used.
