Description
The project evaluates sustainable agricultural practices in semi-arid dryland areas, analyzing their environmental, sociocultural, and economic impact. It aims to improve soil quality, biodiversity, and climate resilience, promoting the recovery of depopulated rural areas and modeling their potential as a strategy to address climate change.
Results
At the farm level: The long-term beneficial effect of improving soil quality properties (physical, chemical, and biological) and increasing production through the implementation of cover crops has been observed. The coexistence of species demonstrates complementary water use strategies. Integrated socio-ecological assessment: Combining indicators of ecosystem, social, and economic services reveals improvements of 20–40% with the application of sustainable management, highlighting economic benefits and improvements in cultural and supporting services. Regional impact: Modeling at the regional scale (10 districts) indicates increases of 61% in economic returns, 30% in regulating services, and 9% in supporting services, demonstrating the potential of sustainable practices across large territories.
