AGROALNEXT Project: Increasing the resilience of irrigated agricultural production based on the incorporation of non-conventional water resources and innovative technological alternatives (I)
- Type Project
- Scope Autonómico
- Autonomous community Murcia, Región de
- Main source of financing NextGenerationEU

Description
The project analyzes the use of desalinated seawater for irrigation as a solution to water scarcity caused by climate change. Environmental, agronomic, and economic impacts are evaluated through life cycle analysis, promoting sustainable water management in agriculture.
Contextual description
The technological alternatives evaluated are the incorporation of ecological inputs, the substitution of conventional water resources with desalinated seawater (DSA), and the replacement of conventional tillage in the rows with inter-row cultivation covers of Thymus and Rosmarinus.
Results
In grapefruit cultivation, the organic system exhibits better environmental performance than conventional farming. With AMD irrigation, boron reduction using ion exchange resins is more sustainable than reverse osmosis. Inter-row covers further enhance environmental sustainability.
