AGROALNEXT Project: Effect of vegetable charcoal or biochar on the efficient use of nitrogen and phosphorus in agriculture in Murcia

  • Type Project
  • Scope Autonómico
  • Autonomous community Murcia, Región de
  • Main source of financing NextGenerationEU

Description
The project evaluates the use of plant biochar combined with organic fertigation in the Campo de Cartagena to regenerate soils, improve water and nutrient efficiency and maintain agricultural productivity in the face of climate change and resource scarcity.
Results
In all crops, the application of biochar did not significantly alter production, even slightly increasing it from the fifth crop onward. The addition of biochar to the soil resulted in an increase in organic matter, cation exchange capacity, and total organic carbon compared to inorganic fertilization. Prolonged biochar treatment reduced water inputs by 13%. The combined treatment of biochar with organic fertilizer enriched with microorganisms increased soil enzyme activity, indicating greater microbial activity.
