Description
The “Mining Agriculture” Project promotes Agriculture 4.0 as a future economic activity for disused mining facilities.
Contextual description
Asturias faces the challenge of converting disused mine tunnels into new productive spaces. This project proposes leveraging these infrastructures for the development of hydroponic vertical farms that are digitized, resilient to climate change, and offer high added value. This strategy aims to diversify agricultural production, revitalize mining areas, and generate new sustainable economic opportunities.
Results
The development of this pilot project has allowed for the identification of viable species and the adjustment of cultivation technology to achieve continuous cycles and reduce costs. The successful cultivation of teardrop peas (Kelvedon and Rondo varieties) and wasabi using the AeroFlow system is particularly noteworthy. Vegetable sprouts and salicornia, which are in high demand in the hospitality industry, have also been successful. Sensor technology is being implemented to digitize crop monitoring.
