Description

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, has assured today that the modification of the Law on measures to improve the functioning of the food chain , which came into force in December 2021, “works”. At the same time, he has advocated for “strengthening its application” through greater efforts in inspections. During the XVII ordinary session of the plenary session of the Food Chain Observatory , in which all agents are represented (producers, fishermen, industry, distribution, consumers, general administration of the State and autonomous communities) and which he chaired today at the ministerial headquarters, the Minister has stated that the functioning of the law is evident when analyzing what has happened with the prices at origin received by farmers and ranchers and in this sense “ its evolution has been positive ”. However, to improve the functioning of this legal framework, the Minister, in line with what was recently announced by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has confirmed that work is already being done to increase inspections related to its compliance , with more analysis of the commercial relations of companies with their suppliers.

In this ordinary session, the first to be held in 2024, two studies have been presented that analyse the evolution of prices and consumption of food and beverages (the studies by INE and Kantar can be consulted at the following link ), as well as the new version of the tool for Studies of costs and incomes of agricultural holdings (Ecrea 2.0), designed by the Undersecretariat of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of the ministry.

During the Plenary Session, it was reported that, in compliance with the Third Additional Provision of the Food Chain Law, the Ministry published, within the deadline, the report with the elements involved in the distribution of the production costs of agricultural, fishing and food products , which have been the subject of analysis in the studies of the value chain carried out by the Food Chain Observatory.
