Abstract
This project falls within the scope of environmental protection and proposes to evaluate the improvement of efficiency in reducing ammonia (NH3) emissions by combining existing Best Available Techniques (BAT). It proposes an innovative combination of a low-cost technique commonly adopted on farms, such as floating covers, with a technique that is much less implemented due to its technical complexity, such as acidification. The aim is to validate whether this combination can improve emission reduction efficiency compared to flexible and/or rigid raft covers, which require an investment that most existing farms cannot afford.
Description
COMETA-P aims to study and measure the reduction of ammonia emissions produced in a pig farm where the techniques of separation, acidification and covering of the storage pond are combined.
Description of activities
- Pilot design and implementation
- Definition and execution of the sampling plan
- Characterization of results
- Project management and coordination
- Communication and dissemination
Objectives
The project seeks to evaluate the improvement in the efficiency of reducing ammonia (NH3) emissions into the atmosphere produced in pig farms by combining existing Best Available Techniques (BAT), proposing an innovative combination between a low-cost technique (floating covers), with a technique with a much lower degree of implementation due to its technical complexity (acidification), to validate if this combination can improve the efficiency of emission reduction compared to flexible and/or rigid raft covers.
Secondary objectives include:
- How does separation affect the amount of acidifier to use per cubic meter to achieve the pH that prevents ammonia emissions?
- What are the main technical drawbacks of recirculating acidified slurry inside barns, such as the type of pumps to use, the entry and exit of the acidified product, the possibilities of automating the process, etc.
- The system is of interest to the farmer, since he will be the final recipient of the treated slurry.
- Economic cost of the process for its possible implementation in other farms
