AGROALNEXT INSECT ECOVAL Project: Assessment of alternatives based on insects to reduce the carbon footprint and promote the circular economy in the valorization of agri-food by-products

Description
The INSECT-ECOVAL project promotes the circular economy by using agro-industrial byproducts for insect farming, such as the mealworm (Tenebrio molitor), thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Optimized feed formulations will be developed, and their environmental impact will be assessed through life cycle analysis.
Results
Five by-products suitable for feeding T. molitor have been identified. The composition of the gut microbiota of T. molitor varies specifically depending on the type of by-product used and its proportion in the diet. Raising T. molitor fed by-products generates a significantly smaller carbon and water footprint than conventional livestock farming.
