INTERREG-SUDOE Cooptree Project: Transnational cooperation for the conservation and resilience of forests in southwestern Europe

The project focuses on two main axes: From Seed to Tree: Identifying the soil and climate conditions in which species of interest are found (either because they are threatened in their current distribution area, or because they may be of interest to other regions in the future). Several genetic characterizations are carried out to better understand these species and preserve the genetic resources of the Southwest. Natural hybridization is also an interesting way for species to adapt to climate change by allowing them to interbreed.

Finally, analyses and trials are being conducted to determine the level of resistance to water deficit of the species of interest, based on future climate models. From Forest to Territories: COOPTREE builds on the valuable legacy of numerous past planting and management experiments in southwestern Europe by creating a network of experimental sites. Now that the issues have evolved, the project aims to implement pilot actions (silvicultural management, experimental plantings, studies, etc.) to preserve forests and improve their resilience in local areas. “The southeastern location of Southwest Europe makes it a sentinel for European territories that will have to face significant climate change and, consequently, the resulting impacts on their forests.

The work at the SUDOE scale reveals considerable gradients in terms of situation (edaphic, biological, topographical, and historical) and climatic influences. Forestry professionals are numerous and possess a wide range of complementary skills and experience. The diversity of ecosystems and species that thrive there is unique and must be preserved, while also constituting an important asset for the adaptation and resilience of the forests.
